As community organizers, #martinlutherkingday impe As community organizers, #martinlutherkingday impels us to recommit our actions to the movement for #blackliberation. White Supremacy is as ubiquitous and commanding as gravity itself, not only in our nation, cities, and neighborhoods, but also in our organizations, workplaces, and meetings. Yet we can break free, even of such a powerful force. Humanity *was* made to fly, to soar, to inhabit the heavens with our imaginations, hopes, and ambitions. For this we need liberty, and we will fight for it. I flatter myself to think that Dr King might have appreciated another metaphor for characterizing the destructive presence of White Supremacy in our lives, using a resonant image from the Christian canon — as one of the dread Horsemen. That would make it one of a cavalry, perhaps its three companions are Patriarchy, Capitalism, and Imperialism. Harbingers of the Apocalypse, their presence is a threat, not to this group or that group, but to all life — their war is against all liberty. So, when we work and ride against these forces, we’re truly fighting for the future of all humankind. So: let us interrogate our practices, relationships, and organizational efforts, and make sure that we’re aligning ourselves to be partisans in the sacred fight for freedom. (Written by Josh from MGBC)

58cm Trek 1400:
$325.00 - This extremely lightweight aluminum road bike was built for speed but made to hold up to rough conditions. It is a 14 speed Flatbar conversion with shimano XT trigger shifters. It was in Trek's middle-to-high end for components and workmanship, and the whole bike is in nearly-unridden, minty condition. The brilliant royal blue really shines. High quality wheels and components, and some lovely touches, like internal cable routing for the rear brake, make this a real catch.
Pickup at Mechanical Gardens Red Hook site at 98 Dikeman St. on Sundays 11am-2pm and Wednesdays between 6:30pm and 8pm.

55cm Trek 1100:
$300.00 - From the early 90s with 21 speeds (3x7), this extremely lightweight aluminum road bike was built for speed but made to hold up to rough conditions. The whole bike is in nearly-unridden, minty condition. High quality wheels and components.
Pickup at Mechanical Gardens Williamsburg site at 195 Maujer St on Mondays 6:30pm-8pm and Wednesdays between 6:30pm and 8pm.

21" Specialized StumpJumper M2:
$175.00 - Get you on this super classic 1991 mountain bike with Shimano Deore XT full groupset 18 speeds (3x6). Generations of savvy cyclists have recognized that the geometry and workmanship of these Stump Jumpers makes them the absolutely ideal bike for city riding. Stable, speedy, and strong -- #GoodForCommute doesn't even begin to describe this one. It's got a pedigree that will make bike nerds drool, and you'll fly past them on your way down the avenues.

Five years in, the Mechanical Gardens Bike Coop ha Five years in, the Mechanical Gardens Bike Coop has helped thousands of New Yorkers gain fair access to biking. As the year closes, our free & low-cost workshops, parts, and bikes are in demand more than ever. Yet free programs require real resources: we need your support to achieve our ambitious agenda for bike equity programs in 2021.
Your tax-deductible donation to the Mechanical Gardens powers an expanding roster of bike access & education programs. Make it a recurring donation for even greater impact. Community members like you are our most significant funders. So please, support your community with an important contribution today. Below are some achievements we accomplished in 2020 with support like yours:

1. 50 Bike Build-a-thon for Healthcare Workers:
Thanks to support from NYCEDC, Lyft, plus grants from the Citizens Committee of New York and the Awesome Foundation, we built 50 new bikes for healthcare workers at Maimonides, NYU Langone, Coney Island Hospital, and inspired similar efforts from NYC to Argentina.

2. 1 Month, 5 Boroughs, 10 Repair Pop-Ups:
We popped up 10 repair stations across the 5 boroughs in October thanks to a partnership with NYC DOT.

3. Red Hook Expansion:
We've launched NYC’s 1st ever outdoor center for bike repair education in Red Hook!

4. COVID-safe open hours:
We helped over 400 people learn to fix their bikes during COVID, and held 2 months of Online classes during lockdown.

5. LGBTQ+Youth Apprentices:
We won a grant from the Awesome Foundation to train youth apprentices from the Fearless Flyers ride club in bike repair basics.

6. Mutual Aid Bike Brigade:
We worked with Make the Road NYC and local organizers to launch an emergency food delivery program in Brooklyn & Queens.

7. Defund NYPD:
We created a 50ft. mobile street mural for justice protests this summer.

8. Big Fix Day:
Repaired bikes for the community in East New York with @thebrownbikegirl

9. Ride 2 DC
We volunteered as mechanics for the @ridetodc

10. NYU bike share repair:
We worked with NYU to repair their bike fleet for distribution to students in need.

11. BK Cranksgiving:
For the 5th year running, we helped plan & execute the charity fundraiser.

On this #GivingTuesday if you have the means to, please consider making a donation to the Mechanical Gardens Bike Coop. We would be humbled and honored by your generosity in these uncertain times. Founded on Nov. 2015 (we turned 5 last month!), we are a bicycle repair and education center dedicated to advancing social equality and environmental sustainability by expanding public access to bike repair tools and knowledge.

Know that your donation is essential and that your contributions of any amount will support our operating costs as well as the growth of our new space in Red Hook. The Mechanical Gardens thrives from community support to keep our programs and opportunities growing strong.

We are grateful to all the people and institutions that have supported us over the past 5 years. Your support helps us pedal forward.
